Work

I work as a software development manager (team leader) at Orion Systems International on two similar products. The first one is an Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI) and the second one is a Provider Index, which records information about health professionals and their affiliations with organizations and facilities and associated health services. Previously I was the team leader on a product called Concerto, which is a Medical Applications Portal. Concerto is able to integrate multiple information systems to provide a single, seamless view of a patient's information through a web-browser.

Orion is probably the leading IT company within New Zealand at present. The company specialises in Health IT software, i.e. software that is used within hospitals and the wider health sector.

Over the 5 years that I have worked at Orion I have used many different technologies to achieve various development and project goals. For those IT geeks reading, the majority of current development revolves around Java and web related technolgies like:

HTTP (yes we actually look at HTTP traffic)
HTML and DHTML (Dynamic HTML)
JavaScript
CSS
Struts, which is a Model View Controller (MVC) framework
Java Server Pages (JSP), which is used for rendering the front end.
Velocity, which is a templating language also used for rendering the front end.
RDBMS (Relational Database Management Systems) for data persistence
Hibernate, which is an open source Object to Relational Mapping (ORM) tool.
Internet Explorer 5.0, 5.5 and 6.0
Firefox 1.0
... lots of other web specific technologies
... and of course common sense and lateral thinking to solve a variety of business/user problems.
